Seattle at Pacific
STOCKTON, Calif. (Interstat) — In a stunning offensive eruption that defied pregame projections, the Seattle Redhawks pounded out 22 hits and routed the Pacific Tigers 15-10 in a nonconference baseball game Sunday evening at Klein Family Field.
The victory gave Seattle the series win, two games to one, after the teams split the first two contests. It marked the highest run total of the season for the Redhawks, who improved to 5-14. Pacific fell to 9-14. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a low-scoring 4-3 win for the Tigers, who were given a slight 51.4 percent probability to win by the same service’s ELO system.
The most important part of the game was Seattle’s relentless and decisive five-run fifth inning, which broke open what had been a 4-3 contest and showcased the Redhawks’ ability to capitalize on both hits and Pacific mistakes. The frame saw Seattle send 12 batters to the plate, collect five hits, and benefit from two Tigers errors and a wild pitch, transforming a tight game into a commanding 12-3 lead from which Pacific could not recover.
Seattle’s offensive onslaught was led by designated hitter Payton Knowles, who was perfect at the plate, going 5 for 5 with a walk, a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Catcher Josh Cunnigan drove in four runs on three hits, including two key two-run doubles. Center fielder Jacob Beauchaine added three hits and three RBIs, while left fielder Hunter Komine had three hits and two RBIs.
The Redhawks set the tone early, scoring three times in the third inning on an RBI single from Beauchaine and Cunnigan’s first two-run double. Pacific answered with two in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from Jake Tandy and a run-scoring single from Grant MacArthur, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
The game turned completely in the top of the fifth. With one run already in, Cunnigan laced his second two-run double of the game. He later scored on an error, and Knowles capped the inning with an RBI single that also plated a run on a Pacific throwing error.
Pacific refused to go quietly, mounting a comeback attempt with a five-run seventh inning. JT Shank launched a two-run homer and Braeden Schnabel followed with another two-run shot, pulling the Tigers to within 12-8. They added two more in the eighth on a two-run double by Brendan O’Sullivan to make it 12-10.
Seattle provided crucial insurance in the top of the eighth, however, as Beauchaine delivered a two-run single and pinch-hitter Royce Hale added an RBI single to extend the lead back to five runs.
Pacific threatened in the ninth, putting two runners in scoring position with one out, but Seattle reliever Luke Alwood struck out two batters to end the game.
Shank and MacArthur each had three hits for the Tigers, who finished with 13 hits as a team but stranded several key runners and hit into three double plays.
Seattle begins a three-game series at San Francisco on Friday. Pacific hosts UC Davis on Tuesday before opening a series with Gonzaga on Friday.
