Brown at Yale
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Dylan Reid authored a historic pitching performance and the Brown Bears’ offense provided more than enough support in an 8-0 victory over the Yale Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at Yale Field, earning a split of the Ivy League doubleheader.
The game, which concluded under evening lights, was dominated from the start by Reid. The Brown right-hander was untouchable, throwing seven no-hit innings while striking out eight and walking one. He faced just one batter over the minimum, erasing a walk with a double play. Reid’s outing followed a strong five-inning, one-run performance in a loss at Seton Hall the previous Sunday.
The most critical sequence of the game occurred in the middle innings, transforming a tight contest into a commanding lead. Brown broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third. Brady Dever singled and scored on a Mark Henshon groundout. Matt Luigs, who had reached on an error, then came home on an Alex Benevento single for a 2-0 advantage.
The Bears broke the game open an inning later against Yale reliever Daniel Cohen. With two on and two out, Luigs delivered a pivotal triple to right field, driving in two runs to extend the lead to 4-0. Luigs finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Brown put the game out of reach in the fifth, capitalizing on control issues by Bulldogs pitching. After two hit batters loaded the bases, Mika Petersen cleared them with a two-run double. Luigs later drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another run, making it 7-0. That offensive outburst came against reliever Brett Faccio and continued against Teo Spadaccini.
Yale’s offense, which had scored 14 runs in Saturday’s win, was silenced. The Bulldogs managed only four singles, two coming after Reid exited. Camren Piwnicki closed the game with two perfect innings of relief for Brown.
The Bears added a final run in the ninth on an RBI single by Dever. Benevento led Brown’s 10-hit attack, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
Yale starter Daniel Cohen took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings. Spadaccini provided 4 1/3 innings of long relief, yielding one run on four hits.
The result defied pregame projections from Interstat, which gave Yale a 69.4% probability to win and projected a 6-4 Bulldogs victory.
With the win, Brown improves to 7-10 overall and evens its Ivy League record after splitting the two-game set. Yale falls to 9-8. The Bears look ahead to a home game against Stonehill on Tuesday, while Yale travels to face Iona on Wednesday.
