Mavericks Outslug Roadrunners to Even Series Behind Winkler’s Strong Start

SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — Kyle Winkler threw five scoreless innings to lead Texas-Arlington to an 11-8 victory over Texas-San Antonio on Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

The Mavericks pounded out 15 hits, scoring six runs in the fifth inning to break open the game. Xavier Melendez and Ethan Ho each homered and drove in three and two runs, respectively. Austin Phillips added four hits.

The Roadrunners, who fell to 14-5, rallied for four runs in the first and three in the ninth on Andrew Stucky’s three-run homer but could not overcome the early deficit. Texas-Arlington improved to 7-11.

Winkler allowed just one earned run on zero hits over five innings to earn the win. The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday.
