Georgia Tech at Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. (Interstat) — Tate McKee delivered a dominant pitching performance and Drew Burress provided the early offensive spark as Georgia Tech routed third-ranked Clemson 10-0 in an Atlantic Coast Conference series opener Thursday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets, capitalizing on a five-run fifth inning and a pair of Clemson errors, handed the Tigers their first shutout loss of the season and snapped their 10-game winning streak in emphatic fashion. The victory improved Georgia Tech to 14-2 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, while Clemson fell to 15-3 and 0-1.

The most critical sequence of the game came in the top of the third inning, which transformed a scoreless pitchers’ duel into a commanding Georgia Tech lead. After Carson Kerce doubled down the left-field line with one out, Burress launched a two-run homer to right field off Clemson starter Aidan Knaak. Following a groundout, Jarren Advincula kept the inning alive with a single, setting the stage for Vahn Lackey. The Yellow Jackets’ catcher then smashed another two-run shot to left-center, staking Georgia Tech to a sudden 4-0 advantage.

That was more than enough support for McKee. The right-hander was brilliant, tossing six no-hit innings. He walked two, hit a batter and struck out seven, facing minimal threat as the Tigers grounded into a double play behind him in the third. McKee retired the final 10 batters he faced, capping a masterful outing that lowered his ERA to 2.25.

Georgia Tech broke the game open in the fifth, chasing Knaak and capitalizing on defensive miscues. Burress led off with a solo homer to left, his second of the game and team-leading seventh of the season. A dropped fly ball by right fielder Nolan Nawrocki put Payton Hernandez on third, and he scored on Advincula’s RBI single. After a pitching change brought in Justin LeGuernic, a throwing error by the reliever allowed another run to score. Will Baker then delivered a two-run single through the right side, pushing the lead to 9-0.

The Yellow Jackets added their final run in the seventh when Kerce, who finished 3 for 4, singled home Baker. Georgia Tech amassed 12 hits total, with Lackey going a perfect 3 for 3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored. Advincula and Baker each had two hits and two RBIs.

Clemson’s offense, which entered the game averaging over eight runs per contest, was completely stifled. The Tigers managed only two singles — one by Jay Dillard in the seventh and an earlier one by Cam Purify in the third — and grounded into two double plays. They never advanced a runner past second base. Jake Lankie completed the combined two-hitter with a scoreless seventh inning for Georgia Tech.

LeGuernic provided a bright spot for Clemson in relief, striking out five over three innings while allowing one earned run on three hits.

The result defied pregame projections from Interstat, whose ELO system gave Clemson a 60.6% probability to win and whose simulator predicted a narrow 8-7 Tigers victory.

The two teams continue the three-game series Friday night.
