Wofford vs South Carolina Upstate
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — Maloy Heaghney’s three-run triple in the fifth inning broke a tie and propelled South Carolina Upstate to a 5-2 victory over Wofford in nonconference baseball Tuesday evening at Cleveland S. Harley Park.
The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded under the lights, saw the Spartans (8-10) capitalize on a pivotal two-out rally to snap a three-game losing streak. The Terriers (10-6), despite outhitting Upstate eight to five, left multiple runners on base and saw a two-run lead evaporate.
Wofford struck first in the fourth inning. With the score tied 1-1, Nate Tribble and Jack Timblin hit consecutive singles. Andrew Mannelly followed with an RBI single to right-center, scoring Tribble. Timblin then came home on a sacrifice bunt by Mason Herndon, giving the Terriers a 2-1 advantage.
South Carolina Upstate had tied the game in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Kenan Bowman. They pulled ahead for good in the decisive fifth. Facing Wofford reliever Corben Childers, Bowman singled and stole second. After a strikeout, walks to Hunter Zenor and Jace Armsey loaded the bases with two outs. Childers struck out Troy Lang for the second out, but Heaghney delivered the game’s biggest hit, lacing a triple to right-center to clear the bases and put the Spartans ahead 5-2.
The rally made a winner of Spartans reliever Jacob Kirby, who provided three scoreless innings of one-hit ball after starter Max Kaplan went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Kirby, Reece Hemmerling and Davis Rivers combined for six shutout innings from the Upstate bullpen.
Wofford starter John Gray was effective over four innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out four. However, the bullpen could not hold the lead. Childers was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs in the fifth. Cade Bouknight and Rivers provided scoreless relief for the Terriers the rest of the way, but the offense could not mount a comeback.
The Terriers put two runners on in the eighth against Hemmerling but could not score. They went down in order in the ninth to end the game.
Wofford next hosts the College of Charleston on Wednesday. South Carolina Upstate opens a three-game series at home against High Point on Friday.
