Preview: Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA (Interstat) — The red-hot Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will aim for a series sweep when they host the Virginia Tech Hokies in an Atlantic Coast Conference baseball matchup Sunday at Russ Chandler Stadium.

First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon, though forecasts call for rain and a temperature of 76 degrees.

Georgia Tech (12-1, 2-0 ACC) has dominated the first two games of the series, winning 16-1 on Friday and 14-5 on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets’ offense has been relentless, outscoring the Hokies 30-6 in the series.

A player to watch for Georgia Tech is catcher Vahn Lackey, who drove in five runs with a home run as part of a 3-for-4 performance in Saturday’s win. For the season, Lackey is batting .375 with two home runs and 14 RBIs.

Virginia Tech (7-7, 0-2) will look to salvage the final game of the series and snap a three-game skid. The Hokies have struggled on the road this season, with all seven losses coming away from home.

The Hokies are expected to start right-hander Brett Renfrow on the mound. Renfrow took the loss Saturday, allowing five earned runs over five innings despite not surrendering a hit, as he struggled with command, walking six batters.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 victory for Georgia Tech.

Following Sunday’s game, Georgia Tech will host Georgia on Tuesday before an ACC road series at Clemson. Virginia Tech is off until a three-game series at Virginia begins next Friday.
