Boston College at Miami (FL)

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Interstat) — Boston College used a four-run fourth inning and a dominant relief performance from Kyle Kipp to secure a series victory, defeating Miami 9-5 on Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Field.

The Eagles (9-6, 2-1 ACC) overcame an early deficit and a late Hurricanes rally, relying on a key home run from Cesar Gonzalez and four scoreless innings from Kipp to close out the win. Miami (12-4, 1-2) outhit Boston College 10-9 but stranded 10 baserunners and could not solve the Eagles’ bullpen over the final five innings.

Miami struck first in the opening frame. Jake Ogden walked, advanced to third on a double by Daniel Cuvet and scored on a single by Derek Williams for a 1-0 lead.

Boston College responded in the second. Jack Toomey doubled and scored on an Esteban Garcia single. After a stolen base and a hit-by-pitch, Garcia came home on a Gonzalez groundout to tie the game.

The Eagles broke the game open in the fourth against Miami starter Tate DeRias. With one on, Luke Gallo doubled before Gonzalez launched a three-run homer to deep left field, his first of the season, for a 4-1 lead. The Hurricanes then turned to reliever Jack Durso.

Miami answered immediately in the bottom half against Boston College reliever Jacob Burnham. Williams led off with a solo homer, his sixth. Later in the inning, with two on, Fabio Peralta delivered a two-run single to tie the game 4-4. Peralta later scored on an RBI single from Cuvet, capitalizing on a Boston College error to take a 5-4 lead.

The back-and-forth continued in the fifth. Boston College loaded the bases against Durso and TJ Coats. Gallo then delivered a two-run single to center, scoring Toomey and Garcia to put the Eagles back ahead 6-5.

Boston College extended its lead in the seventh when Nick Wang hit a solo home run, his fifth, off Coats to make it 7-5. The Eagles added two insurance runs in the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Garcia and a Miami fielding error.

The most important part of the game was the shutdown relief work of the Boston College bullpen, particularly Kyle Kipp. After Miami’s four-run fourth, John Kwiatkowski entered and recorded the final two outs to stop the bleeding. Kipp then took over to start the sixth and was nearly untouchable. He fired four perfect innings, striking out three, to earn the save and seal the victory. Miami’s only threat against him came in the eighth when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Kipp induced an inning-ending groundout from Cuvet.

Lyndon Glidewell provided two perfect innings of relief with four strikeouts for Miami. Brady Miller started for Boston College, allowing one run over three innings.

The series win marks a significant road victory for Boston College, which took two of three from the highly-ranked Hurricanes. Miami’s potent offense was held to just one run over the final five innings.

Boston College travels to play Connecticut on Tuesday. Miami visits UCF on Wednesday.
