Saint Thomas (Minn.) at Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of form and fortune, the Saint Thomas Tommies erupted for 13 runs on 15 hits to throttle the Kansas Jayhawks 13-2 on Sunday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark, snapping a three-game series skid and earning a decisive victory in the finale.

The Tommies, who entered the game with a 1-11 record and had been outscored 24-15 in the first three games of the series, dominated from the outset against a Kansas team that was projected as an overwhelming favorite. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 7-1 Kansas win, with an ELO system giving the Jayhawks an 80.5% probability of victory.

Instead, Saint Thomas pitchers Evan Esch, Jack Scanlon and Sam Stockman combined to throw eight no-hit innings, allowing just two unearned runs. The trio struck out seven and walked five. Esch, the starter, earned the win with four perfect innings, striking out two. The Jayhawks’ only hit was a sixth-inning triple by Brady Ballinger, which led to their first run on a groundout.

The Tommies’ offense, which had been held in check for much of the series, broke through in the second inning. Terek Verhage scored on an RBI double by Easton Fritcher, who then came home on a Tanner Recchio single for a 2-0 lead.

The game’s most pivotal sequence came in the top of the seventh inning, with Saint Thomas leading 3-0. The Tommies sent 11 men to the plate and scored six runs to blow the game open. The rally was capped by a bases-clearing, three-run double by shortstop Adam Puder, who laced a line drive down the left field line to break the game wide open. Zan VonSchlegell followed with an RBI single to score Puder, making it 9-0.

Puder was the offensive star, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. All three of his hits were doubles. The performance marked a significant rebound for Puder, who was 0-for-4 in the series opener on Thursday.

Saint Thomas added four more runs in the eighth, highlighted by a solo home run from Lucas McNellis, his first of the season, and another RBI double from Puder.

Kansas used eight pitchers in the loss, with starter Madden Seidl taking the defeat. Kannon Carr provided 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on one hit. The Jayhawks scored their runs in the sixth on Ballinger’s triple and a groundout, and in the eighth on a sacrifice fly after a fielding error by Tommies left fielder Christopher Knowles.

The victory improves Saint Thomas to 2-11 on the season, while Kansas falls to 10-5. The Tommies travel to face Iowa on Tuesday. Kansas begins Big 12 Conference play on the road at Texas Christian on Tuesday before a weekend series at Texas Tech.
