Texas-San Antonio at New Mexico State
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Interstat) — Conor Myles and Ryan Self combined for a dominant three-hit shutout, and the Texas-San Antonio offense erupted for 14 hits in a 13-0 rout of New Mexico State on Saturday at Presley Askew Field.
The Roadrunners (13-1) clinched the weekend series after a 10-2 win on Friday, handing the Aggies (5-8) their fifth straight loss in emphatic fashion. The result defied a pregame projection from Interstat that forecast a narrow 8-7 Texas-San Antonio victory.
The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the fifth inning, where the Roadrunners broke open a 2-0 contest with a seven-run outburst. The inning featured six hits, two New Mexico State errors and sent 12 batters to the plate, transforming a competitive game into a decisive blowout.
The onslaught began with Chris Hallmark’s double. Drew Detlefsen and Lane Haworth followed with RBI singles, with Haworth’s hit scoring Detlefsen after he advanced on a wild pitch. Josh Arquette added another run-scoring single before Jacob Silva doubled. A fielding error by the Aggies’ third baseman allowed another run to score. Diego Diaz then drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Pinch-hitter Cade Miller doubled, and fellow pinch-hitter Jordan Ballin capped the inning with a two-run single through the left side, stretching the lead to 9-0.
That was more than enough support for Myles, the top star for Texas-San Antonio. The right-hander was nearly untouchable, pitching 5 1/3 hitless innings. He walked two and struck out eight before exiting after 5 1/3 frames. Myles extended a stellar run, having also thrown five hitless innings in relief against Baylor on March 1.
Self was equally overpowering in relief, striking out four of the six batters he faced over 1 2/3 perfect innings to seal the combined shutout. New Mexico State’s only hits were a third-inning single by Cole Rogers, a fourth-inning single by Tommy Meluskey and a sixth-inning double by Steve Solorzano.
Texas-San Antonio added two unearned runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Silva and a solo home run by Andrew Stucky. Detlefsen provided the final margin in the seventh with a two-run homer to left-center field, his first of the season.
Haworth led the Roadrunners’ 14-hit attack, going 4 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Detlefsen finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs. Ballin drove in two runs without recording an official at-bat, drawing a walk and delivering his two-run single as a pinch-hitter.
New Mexico State starter JT Price took the loss, allowing two runs in one inning of work. Aggies reliever Asa Briggs provided one of the few bright spots for the home team, throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings with one hit allowed.
The teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday. Texas-San Antonio will visit Texas Tech for a two-game midweek set starting Tuesday, while New Mexico State prepares for a road series at Dallas Baptist next weekend.
