Fresno State at Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — Smith Bailey delivered a dominant start and the Arizona Wildcats erupted for a five-run seventh inning to erase a four-run deficit and defeat the Fresno State Bulldogs 9-5 in nonconference baseball Saturday at Hi Corbett Field.
Bailey, Arizona’s starting pitcher, was the cornerstone of the victory. He worked seven strong innings, allowing four hits and no earned runs while striking out nine. He walked just one batter. His performance stabilized the Wildcats after they fell behind early and set the stage for the comeback.
Fresno State built its lead without a major rally, scratching across single runs in the first and second innings off Arizona starter Parker Heintz. The Bulldogs’ Michael Boyd was a consistent offensive threat, finishing three for three with two RBIs. His single in the second drove in the game’s first run, and an RBI groundout by TJ Adams in the bottom of the second got Arizona on the board.
The game’s complexion changed dramatically in the middle innings. After Bailey settled in, Fresno State relievers Jordan Haver and Parker Heintz combined for five scoreless frames, with Haver pitching two perfect innings. The Bulldogs carried a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, a margin built on small ball and Arizona mistakes.
The bottom of the seventh proved to be the decisive turn. Trailing by four, Arizona’s offense ignited. Maddox Mihalakis, who finished three for five with three RBIs, doubled home a run. After a run-scoring single by Kaden Meyers, Carson McEntire provided the pivotal blow, a two-run homer to deep left field that gave Arizona its first lead at 6-5. The Wildcats sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning, capitalizing on a wild pitch and collecting four hits.
Fresno State responded immediately in the top of the eighth, battering the Arizona bullpen to tie the game. An RBI single by Jake Faust and a two-run single by Boyd highlighted a four-run outburst that put the Bulldogs back ahead, 9-5.
Arizona had the final answer in the bottom half of the eighth. Back-to-back errors by Fresno State third baseman Nolen opened the door. Tony Lira drove in a run with a single, and Maddox Mihalakis followed with a two-run single through the right side to put the Wildcats back in front for good. Reliever Garrett Hicks recorded the final four outs to secure the win.
The victory improved Arizona’s season record to 5-9, while Fresno State fell to 7-6. The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday.
The most important part of the game was Arizona’s five-run seventh inning. It transformed a 5-1 deficit into a 6-5 lead, shifting all momentum to the home team. The inning featured key hits from the middle of the Wildcats’ order and was the direct result of Bailey’s ability to keep the game within reach through his seven innings of work.
