Murray State at UCF
ORLANDO, Fla. (Interstat) — A dominant pitching performance and a timely home run propelled the UCF Knights to a 4-0 victory over the Murray State Racers on Saturday at Jay Bergman Field, securing a series win.
The story of the game was written on the mound, where UCF starter Matt Sauser and reliever Evan Jones combined with Jacob Hustedde of Murray State to craft a tense pitchers’ duel for the first five innings. The Knights improved to 8-5, while the Racers fell to 10-5.
UCF struck first in a chaotic opening frame. Andrew Williamson led off with a bunt single, stole second, and then raced home on a wild pitch and a throwing error by Murray State catcher Kingsley Guthrie for an unearned run. That lone run would stand for most of the afternoon as both starters stifled opposing lineups.
Sauser, named the top star for UCF, delivered 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five. His counterpart, Hustedde, was equally brilliant for Murray State. The Racers’ starter threw five no-hit innings, walking three and striking out two while keeping UCF off balance.
The Racers threatened in the top of the sixth, putting runners on second and third with two outs after singles by Luke Mistone and Kris Hokenson. UCF manager Rich Wallace then summoned Jones from the bullpen, who promptly struck out Kainen Jorge to end the inning and preserve the 1-0 lead.
The momentum shifted decisively in the bottom of the sixth. After Hustedde exited, Murray State reliever Carter Boyd allowed an unearned run to score on an infield single by Austin Jacobs and a throwing error by third baseman Anthony Perritano, extending UCF’s lead to 2-0.
The Knights put the game out of reach in the seventh. Williamson walked, stole second, and then watched as catcher Zak Skinner launched a two-run homer to left field, his second of the season, to make it 4-0. That blast provided crucial insurance and capped the scoring.
Jones was exceptional in relief to earn the win, firing 3 1/3 innings of one-hit ball and striking out five. After Skinner’s homer, Parker Patterson provided 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief for Murray State, but the Racers’ offense could not solve the UCF pitching staff. Murray State managed only four hits total, with Hokenson collecting two of them.
The most important sequence of the game occurred in the top of the sixth inning. With Murray State mounting its only serious scoring threat, Jones entered in a high-leverage situation and recorded a critical strikeout to strand two runners in scoring position. This defensive stand prevented the Racers from tying or taking the lead and set the stage for UCF’s offensive breakout in the subsequent innings.
The victory gave UCF a 2-0 edge in the three-game weekend series, following an 8-3 win on Friday. The teams conclude the series on Sunday. The result defied the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a high-scoring 8-5 win for Murray State, though UCF was a slight favorite per the system’s ELO probability.
Murray State will look to avoid the sweep before heading to Lindenwood next weekend, while UCF prepares for a midweek showdown with Miami (FL) followed by a marquee home series against Oklahoma State.
