Western Carolina at Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Drew Munn delivered a dominant performance on the mound, and the Charlotte 49ers’ offense provided ample support in a 4-0 victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday evening at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.
The game, played before a crowd of 1,847, was a stark contrast to the high-scoring affair projected by Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast an 8-7 final. Instead, it became a showcase for Charlotte’s pitching and a frustrating afternoon for a Western Carolina lineup that managed just two hits.
Munn, a right-hander for the 49ers, was the unequivocal star. He pitched eight masterful innings, allowing only those two hits and no runs while striking out seven and walking one. This outing was a powerful rebound from his last appearance on March 1 against Old Dominion, where he allowed two earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief. On this afternoon, he was in complete command, efficiently working through the Catamounts’ order and facing the minimum through the first four innings.
Western Carolina starter Carter Burnette matched Munn’s zeros early, keeping Charlotte hitless through the first two innings. However, the 49ers broke through in the bottom of the third without the benefit of a clean hit. Spencer Nolan led off with a double down the left-field line, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored when Dawson Bryce reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, giving Charlotte a 1-0 lead.
The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning, which effectively put the contest out of reach. Todd Hudson sparked the rally with a single up the middle. Nolan then delivered his second double of the game, this time driving in Hudson. After another productive out moved Nolan to third, Bryce delivered a clean single through the left side to plate Nolan, extending the lead to 3-0 and chasing Burnette from the game.
Burnette took the loss for Western Carolina, his record falling to 1-2. Over five innings, he allowed three runs, though only one was earned, on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Charlotte added an insurance run in the sixth against reliever Owen Austin. Hudson and Nolan singled again, and Robert Nedry followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Hudson for the final 4-0 margin. Nolan finished the afternoon 4 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Nedry went 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Western Carolina’s only serious scoring threat came in the top of the sixth. After Munn retired the first two batters, Nate Holton doubled to left-center for the Catamounts’ first hit. Munn escaped by getting the next batter to fly out to center, snuffing out the rally.
AJ Camp relieved Munn in the ninth and struck out the side in order, sealing the shutout.
With the win, Charlotte improved to 10-4 on the season, while Western Carolina fell to 10-5. The two teams are scheduled to conclude their series on Sunday afternoon.
The victory was Charlotte’s second straight following a 7-1 win over Radford on Friday. Western Carolina, coming off a 7-1 loss at Radford on Friday, has now been shut out for the first time this season.
