Western Carolina at Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Two surging teams will meet under the threat of rain Saturday evening when the Western Carolina Catamounts visit the Charlotte 49ers at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.
Both teams enter the nonconference matchup with identical 9-win records. Western Carolina (9-3) brings a three-game winning streak, including a dramatic 10-9 road victory at Georgia on Wednesday. Charlotte (9-4) has won four of its last five, coming off a 7-1 win over Radford on Friday.
The game features a compelling matchup between a red-hot hitter and a dominant pitcher. Western Carolina third baseman Mason Holton is coming off a historic performance, going 4 for 5 with a home run and seven RBIs in the win over Georgia. Over his last five games, he is 10 for 20 with 10 RBIs.
He will face a Charlotte pitching staff led by Eddie Copper, who is expected to start. Copper was stellar in Friday’s victory, tossing six innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out nine. In three relief appearances this season, he has a 1.50 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 12.2 innings.
Weather could be a factor, with a forecast of 78 degrees and rain at first pitch.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, this contest projects as a high-scoring affair, with Western Carolina edging Charlotte 8-7.
The game is part of a two-game weekend set. The series concludes Sunday afternoon in Charlotte.
