Santa Clara at Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — LJ Mercurius continued his dominant start to the season with six shutout innings, and the Oklahoma Sooners’ offense erupted for eight runs on 12 hits to complete a Saturday evening shutout of the Santa Clara Broncos, 8-0, at L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park.

The victory, played under the lights after an afternoon start, secured a series win for the No. 8-ranked Sooners, who improved to 13-2. Santa Clara fell to 5-8, having been outscored 10-0 in the first two games of the weekend set.

The most important part of the game came early, as Oklahoma capitalized on Santa Clara starter Jace Gillmore’s command issues in a decisive second inning. After a walk and a fielder’s choice, Dane Dickerson laced an RBI double to right-center field to open the scoring. Following another walk, Brendan Brock delivered the key blow, a two-run double to left-center that scored two more, staking the Sooners to a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish.

That was more than enough support for Mercurius. The right-hander scattered four hits, struck out six and walked none, efficiently navigating the Broncos’ lineup. He has now thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings over his last two starts, following a seven-inning, one-hit gem against Gonzaga on Feb. 28.

Oklahoma methodically extended its lead. A sacrifice fly by Dyson Harris in the third made it 4-0. In the fourth, Deiten Lachance drove in a run with a single off reliever Tyler Alleman, who otherwise provided 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for Santa Clara.

The Sooners put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth inning. Lachance added his second RBI with a double, and Anthony Blair and Kade Branch followed with run-scoring singles to push the advantage to 8-0.

Lachance finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Brock also drove in two, while Blair went 2 for 4 with an RBI. The Sooners’ bullpen was flawless in preserving the shutout, as Mason Bixby, Nate Smithburg and Drew Rerick each pitched a perfect inning of relief, combining for five strikeouts.

Santa Clara’s offense never threatened, managing just four singles and a double from Jack Rayment. The Broncos put only three runners in scoring position all evening and hit into two double plays.

The win continued Oklahoma’s strong early-season form, while Santa Clara’s struggles at the plate persisted. The Broncos have scored just one run in their last 27 innings against Sooners pitching this series.

The teams conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon. Oklahoma will look for the sweep before hosting Texas-Arlington on Tuesday. Santa Clara aims to salvage a game before returning home to host Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

According to pregame projections, Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 7-4 Oklahoma victory, while its ELO system gave the Sooners a 79.5% probability to win. The actual result was a more lopsided affair, fueled by Mercurius’s command and the Sooners’ relentless offensive pressure.
