Santa Clara at Oklahoma
NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — The Santa Clara Broncos will look to salvage a game in their weekend series against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Baseball Park, but they must contend with both a hot opponent and a wet forecast.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. under a threat of rain and temperatures near 73 degrees.
Oklahoma (12-2) has taken the first two games of the series, including a 2-1 pitchers’ duel on Thursday and a 2-0 win Friday. The Sooners’ pitching has stifled Santa Clara (5-7), allowing just one run over 18 innings in the series.
A marquee pitching rematch is set for Saturday. Santa Clara will start right-hander Max Bayles, who was brilliant in relief on Thursday, striking out 10 over four hitless and scoreless innings. Over his last three appearances, Bayles has 25 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings.
He will face a Sooners lineup that is batting .312 as a team. Oklahoma counters with right-hander Cameron Johnson, who earned the win on Thursday by tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Johnson has been a key part of a Sooners staff that boasts a 2.21 ERA.
The Broncos’ offense, hitting just .235 collectively, has struggled to generate rallies. They will need to solve Johnson and the Oklahoma bullpen to avoid a series sweep.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Oklahoma is projected to win 7-4.
After Saturday’s game, the series concludes Sunday before both teams embark on extended homestands.
