Stetson at Arkansas
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — Hunter Dietz struck out 12 over six dominant innings, and the Arkansas offense erupted for 13 runs on 13 hits as the Razorbacks routed Stetson 13-1 on Saturday afternoon at Baum Stadium.
The victory, played before an announced crowd of 10,327, secured the series win for Arkansas after a 7-1 triumph on Friday. The Razorbacks improved to 12-3, while the Hatters fell to 5-10.
Dietz, a junior left-hander, was the story from the outset. He allowed just four singles, did not walk a batter and did not allow an earned run. He set the tone by striking out the side in the first inning and finished his outing by striking out the side in the sixth. Over his last two starts, Dietz has now pitched 13 scoreless innings, allowing six hits and striking out 20.
The most important part of the game came in the bottom of the second and third innings, where Arkansas transformed a 1-0 deficit into a commanding lead. Stetson had taken an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first without a hit, capitalizing on a walk, a stolen base, a passed ball and a hit batter that forced in a run.
Arkansas answered immediately in the second. After a walk and a stolen base, Maika Niu’s single put runners on the corners. A wild pitch allowed the tying run to score. Later in the inning, with two on and two out, Camden Kozeal laced a two-run double to left-center field to give the Razorbacks a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish.
The floodgates opened in the third. Arkansas sent nine men to the plate, scoring four runs on four hits to break the game open. Niu delivered the big blow, a two-run double to right-center. Nolan Souza followed with a two-run single to right, pushing the lead to 7-1.
The Razorbacks continued to apply pressure, scoring three more in the fourth and two in the sixth. Niu finished a perfect 3 for 3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Souza went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Kozeal was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Kuhio Aloy drove in two runs without a hit, drawing two bases-loaded walks.
Stetson managed only four singles off three Arkansas pitchers. The Hatters’ lone run came in the sixth on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Paul Napolitano, scoring a runner who had reached on an error.
Brendan Walker provided a bright spot for Stetson in relief, tossing two hitless innings with three strikeouts. Cooper Dossett finished the game for Arkansas with a perfect seventh inning, striking out one.
The game far exceeded the projection of Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-5 Arkansas victory. The Razorbacks’ 81.4% win probability per the service’s ELO system proved conservative.
The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon. Arkansas will go for the sweep before opening Southeastern Conference play next weekend against Mississippi State. Stetson will look to salvage the final game before returning to Florida for a midweek contest against Prairie View.
