Louisiana Tech at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. (Interstat) — Hudson Rowan delivered a dominant performance on the mound, and the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs used a pair of late home runs to secure a 6-2 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars in college baseball Saturday at Eddie Stanky Field.

The win, which evened the weekend series after a 9-3 loss on Friday, improved Louisiana Tech to 9-7 on the season. South Alabama, which entered the game with an 11-3 record, fell to 11-4.

The most important part of the game was Rowan’s commanding start, which stifled a potent Jaguars lineup. The right-hander pitched six innings, allowing two runs, none earned, on just four hits while striking out four. He did not issue a walk. This outing marked a stark turnaround for Rowan, who had struggled in his two previous appearances, allowing six earned runs over 4 2/3 combined innings against Southern Mississippi and Arkansas State.

Louisiana Tech struck first in the opening inning. Colby Lunsford singled and later scored on an RBI single up the middle by Sebastian Mexico, who finished the day 3 for 4 with an RBI.

South Alabama answered in the second inning when Blake Guerin launched a solo home run to left-center field off Rowan. The Jaguars added an unearned run in the fifth. Rett Johnson led off with a bunt single, advanced to third on a pair of Bulldog miscues, and scored on a groundout by Brennon Wright to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The game remained tight until the seventh inning. With one out and a runner on first, Louisiana Tech center fielder Zeb Ruddell connected for a two-run homer to left field off reliever Bryant Quimby, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 4-1.

After South Alabama starter Ryland Bozenhard exited following 5 2/3 solid innings of one-run ball, the Bulldogs added an insurance run in the eighth. Mexico singled, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a single by Wesley Scott.

Louisiana Tech put the game out of reach in the ninth against Jaguars reliever Brayton Goode. After Lunsford was hit by a pitch, first baseman Trey Hawsey launched a two-run homer to center field, making it 6-1.

Riley Fisher closed the game for the Bulldogs with three perfect innings of relief, striking out four to earn the save. He preserved the combined four-hitter after Rowan’s strong start.

Bozenhard took the loss for South Alabama, his record falling to 0-1. He allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out six.

The Bulldogs’ 10-hit attack was led by Mexico and Ruddell, who went 2 for 4 with his two-run homer. Hawsey also had two hits, including his two-run shot.

The series finale is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Louisiana Tech will look to win the series before returning home to face Lamar on Tuesday. South Alabama will aim to rebound before hosting Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday.
