Northern Colorado at Utah Valley
VINEYARD, Utah (Interstat) -- The Northern Colorado Bears erupted for 10 runs in the first two innings and rode a dominant relief performance from Trevor Landen to a 14-3 victory over the Utah Valley Wolverines in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
The result defied pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a Utah Valley win by a score of 8-1, giving the Wolverines a 74.1 percent probability of victory. Instead, the Bears (2-15) snapped a three-game skid and secured just their second win of the season in emphatic fashion, pounding out 17 hits. Utah Valley fell to 7-7.
The most important part of the game was Northern Colorado’s immediate offensive onslaught, which seized control before many fans had settled into their seats. The Bears sent nine men to the plate in a four-run first inning against Utah Valley starter Zaborowski, who recorded only one out before being relieved. Logan Pruski and Zeke Minic delivered run-scoring singles, and Brett Barber added an RBI hit.
The Bears then broke the game open with a six-run second inning, sending 13 batters to the plate against relievers Seely and Baack. Jaden Stone and Pruski each drove in runs, Mason Griffin drew a bases-loaded walk, and two more runs scored on an error by Utah Valley center fielder Jayden Smith. By the time the inning ended, Northern Colorado led 10-0.
Utah Valley scratched across three runs in the third inning, capitalizing on a walk, a single, an error and a wild pitch from Bears starter Gus Allred. Smith, who finished the day 3 for 3, drove in one run with a double, and another scored on a groundout. That prompted Northern Colorado to bring in Landen with two outs in the inning.
Landen proved to be the game’s top star, extinguishing the Wolverines’ rally and then stifling them completely. He inherited two baserunners but ended the third, then proceeded to pitch 4 2/3 innings of perfect, hitless relief. He struck out four and faced the minimum 14 batters, a stark turnaround from his recent outings where he had allowed eight earned runs over five innings. His effort allowed the Bears’ offense to continue adding on, with runs in the fifth and seventh innings, while Utah Valley managed just one baserunner after the third.
Pruski led the Bears’ offensive barrage, going 3 for 5 with a double and four RBIs. Minic was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Stone went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and Griffin added two hits and two RBIs. Barber contributed two hits and an RBI.
For Utah Valley, Cohen Baack provided 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief after the early damage, allowing just one hit. Smith’s three hits accounted for the majority of the Wolverines’ four total hits in the game.
The two teams were set to conclude the doubleheader later Saturday. The series continues Sunday and Monday at Brent Brown Ballpark. Northern Colorado will open a six-game homestand next Friday against Saint Thomas (Minn.), while Utah Valley hosts Cincinnati for a two-game set beginning March 16.
