Lackey Powers Georgia Tech Past Virginia Tech in ACC Slugfest
ATLANTA (Interstat) — Vahn Lackey drove in five runs, including a go-ahead two-run homer, as eighth-ranked Georgia Tech erupted for nine runs in the seventh inning to rout Virginia Tech 14-5 on Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets (12-1, 2-0 ACC) trailed 5-2 before tying the game in the fifth. The contest exploded in the seventh, when Georgia Tech sent 13 batters to the plate. Lackey’s blast sparked the onslaught, which included back-to-back homers from Ryan Zuckerman and Will Baker and a second solo shot from Caleb Daniel.
Virginia Tech (7-7, 0-2) scored all five of its runs in the fifth, capitalizing on errors, but its bullpen could not contain the Georgia Tech lineup. The Yellow Jackets amassed 18 hits. Dylan Loy earned the win in relief for Georgia Tech, while Brett Renfrow took the loss for the Hokies.
