UCLA at Ohio State
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — The UCLA Bruins unleashed a relentless offensive barrage and received a dominant relief performance from Wylan Moss to rout the Ohio State Buckeyes 19-6 in a nonconference baseball game Saturday evening at Bill Davis Stadium.
The Bruins (12-2) pounded out 14 hits and capitalized on 10 walks and three Ohio State errors to secure their second lopsided victory in as many days over the Buckeyes (5-8), following an 11-1 win Friday.
The most important part of the game came after Ohio State had shown a flicker of life. Trailing 11-2, the Buckeyes mounted a four-run rally in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Mason Eckelman and a two-run home run by Dane Harvey, cutting the deficit to 11-6. UCLA reliever Angel Cervantes entered and recorded the final out of the inning.
UCLA coach John Savage then turned to Moss in the fourth, and the right-hander extinguished any hope of an Ohio State comeback. Moss delivered five perfect innings of relief, striking out eight consecutive batters at one point and finishing with eight total strikeouts. He faced the minimum 15 batters, allowing no hits and no walks. This performance starkly contrasted with his last outing on March 1, where he allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings against Mississippi State.
Moss’s outing stabilized the game and allowed the Bruins’ offense to continue building its lead unabated. The Bruins had already built a substantial advantage with a six-run first inning and a five-run third. They added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings before putting the game completely out of reach with a six-run eighth inning, sending 12 batters to the plate.
Will Gasparino led UCLA’s offensive charge, going 4 for 5 with a double, four RBIs and four runs scored. Dean West and Mulivai Levu each drove in four runs, with West hitting a three-run homer in the third and Levu adding a three-run shot in the second. Payton Brennan contributed three RBIs.
For Ohio State, Eckelman went 2 for 4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Harvey also homered, finishing with two hits and two RBIs. Buckeyes starter Chris Domke struggled, allowing eight earned runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings. Reliever Jake Michalak provided a bright spot with three innings of scoreless, one-hit ball, striking out five.
The game, organized by the Big Ten, saw UCLA outperform the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted an 8-4 Bruins victory and whose ELO system gave UCLA a 77.5% probability to win.
The Bruins’ season-best offensive output improved their record in road games and set the stage for a series sweep attempt Sunday afternoon. Ohio State will look to salvage the final game of the three-game set before both teams continue their nonconference schedules next week.
