Seton Hall at Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Interstat) — The Louisville Cardinals erupted for seven runs in a disastrous second inning for Seton Hall, capitalizing on a cascade of errors to seize control and cruise to a 13-3 victory over the Pirates on Saturday evening at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded under the lights, saw the Cardinals improve to 9-5 while the Pirates fell to 4-6. The offensive outburst far exceeded the Interstat game simulator’s projection of a 7-6 Louisville win, though it aligned with the system’s high probability forecast for a Cardinals victory.
The decisive turning point came in the bottom of the second inning. Trailing 3-1, Louisville’s offense was ignited by Seton Hall’s defensive miscues. After a strikeout, Dylan Hisle singled and Logan Baker reached on a critical fielding error by the shortstop, allowing both runners to advance into scoring position. Kade Elam then drove in Hisle with an infield single. Baker scored, and Elam moved to second, on a wild pitch to tie the game.
The floodgates then opened. After a walk, shortstop Alex Alicea laced a two-run double to left field, plating two unearned runs. First baseman Tague Davis followed by launching a two-run home run to left field, scoring Alicea. The Pirates committed another error later in the inning, leading to an eighth Louisville run. When the inning finally ended, the Cardinals had sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs—all unearned—on five hits, two walks, two errors, and a wild pitch.
Louisville starter Wyatt Danilowicz earned the win, working five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out eight. The Cardinals’ bullpen was dominant, combining for four perfect innings of relief. Casen Murphy struck out five over two innings, and Kian Vorster added two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 eighth.
Seton Hall had built an early 3-0 lead. They scored once in the second on an RBI single by Jake Lopez and added two more in the fourth on an RBI triple by Gabe Cavazzo. However, the Pirates managed only seven hits total and struck out 15 times against Louisville pitching.
Alicea led the Cardinals’ 14-hit attack, going 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Elam also had three hits and drove in two. Davis’s three RBIs, including the two-run homer, were a game high.
For Seton Hall, relievers Greg Bruno and Connor Byrne each provided a scoreless inning of work. The loss was the second in as many days for the Pirates against Louisville, following a 16-1 defeat on Friday.
The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday.
