Binghamton at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — The Richmond Spiders will look to even their weekend series when they host the Binghamton Bearcats in an afternoon contest Saturday at Malcolm U. Pitt Field, though rain in the forecast could complicate the schedule.
The game is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch under threatening skies, with a 75-degree temperature and rain expected.
Richmond (8-6) aims to bounce back after dropping the series opener 5-2 on Friday. The Spiders’ offense was stifled by Binghamton starter Conner Griffin, who threw five hitless innings. Richmond will turn to right-hander Glenn Smith for the rebound effort. Smith took the loss Friday, allowing two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings.
Binghamton (3-7) secured just its third win of the season in the opener, powered by Griffin’s strong start and a two-run homer from center fielder Matt Bolton. The Bearcats have struggled on the road this season, with all their wins coming away from home.
A key matchup will be Smith against the Binghamton lineup for the second consecutive day. Smith has been a workhorse, logging at least five innings in his last three starts. The Bearcats will counter with a bullpen likely tasked with a committee approach after using just two relievers Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-2 victory for the Spiders.
Following Saturday’s contest, the series concludes Sunday afternoon. Richmond then hosts Coppin State on Tuesday, while Binghamton returns home to face Saint Bonaventure.
