Quinnipiac at UNC Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — In a wild offensive display that defied pregame projections, the Quinnipiac Bobcats outslugged the UNC Greensboro Spartans 14-11 on Saturday at UNCG Baseball Stadium to even their weekend series.
The game, a stark contrast to the Spartans’ 13-3 victory a day prior, featured 35 combined hits and a decisive seven-run outburst by Quinnipiac in the seventh inning that proved insurmountable.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a low-scoring affair with UNC Greensboro winning 5-3, and its ELO system gave the Spartans a 69.4% probability of victory. Instead, both lineups erupted early. UNC Greensboro struck first, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jake Mueller and Luke Jenkins each delivered RBI singles, and Brantley Truitt capped the rally with a two-run single up the middle.
Quinnipiac catcher Cole Constable began chipping away in the third inning with a solo home run to deep right field. The Spartans answered in the fourth when Jenkins launched a two-run homer, scoring Mueller and extending their lead to 7-1.
The momentum shifted violently in the top of the fifth. The Bobcats sent 11 men to the plate, scoring five runs to narrow the gap to 8-7. The inning was fueled by an RBI single from Constable, a costly two-error play by the Spartans’ defense that allowed two runs to score, and a run-scoring groundout from Kyle Garbowski.
The most important sequence of the game arrived in the seventh. With Quinnipiac still trailing by a run, James Marino gave the Bobcats their first lead with a two-run double down the right field line, scoring Garbowski and Jack Balcer. After a pitching change and a walk forced in another run, Alex Irizarry singled through the right side to drive in two, pushing the lead to 12-8.
The inning’s exclamation point came from Garbowski. The second baseman, who entered the game in a 3-for-16 slump over his previous four contests, crushed a line drive to left-center field that eluded the Spartans’ outfielders. Garbowski circled the bases for a three-run, inside-the-park home run, capping the seven-run frame and extending Quinnipiac’s lead to 14-8.
Garbowski finished 1 for 4 with the pivotal homer and four RBIs, earning top star honors for Quinnipiac. Constable added three hits, including his homer, and two RBIs.
UNC Greensboro mounted a late threat, scoring three times in the eighth inning on a two-run single by pinch-hitter Luke Holland to pull within 14-11. The Spartans loaded the bases later in the inning, but Quinnipiac reliever Mike Poncini entered and recorded a crucial groundout to end the threat. Matt Alduino then pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the win.
Jenkins led the Spartans’ 19-hit attack, going 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs. Jacob Budzik added two hits, including a double and a triple.
Quinnipiac reliever J.C. Franconere provided critical stability for the Bobcats, tossing 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief after entering in the fourth, allowing just one unearned run. For UNC Greensboro, reliever John Horton was effective in a mop-up role, pitching 2 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball.
The Bobcats improved to 3-8 overall, while the Spartans fell to 6-9. The teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon.
