Manhattan at Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (Interstat) — Kyle Pollack drove in six runs, including three on a sixth-inning triple that broke the game open, and the Marist Red Foxes erupted for a 17-5 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball Saturday at James J. McCann Baseball Field.

The offensive outburst, which saw Marist pound out 14 hits, delivered the Red Foxes their first win of the season after 11 consecutive losses. Manhattan fell to .500 at 6-6.

The game’s decisive sequence came in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Marist already leading 10-5. After a leadoff double from Scott Esposito and a walk to TJ Baer, Noel Rivera drove in one run with a double. Following another walk to load the bases, Pollack cleared them with a towering triple to right-center field, stretching the lead to 14-5. Pollack then scored on a passed ball, and the Red Foxes added another run on a fielder’s choice to complete a seven-run inning and take a commanding 16-5 lead.

Pollack, the first baseman, finished the afternoon 3 for 4. His performance was a dramatic turnaround from his recent outings, having driven in just five runs over his previous four games combined. His two-run single in the fifth had given Marist an 8-5 lead and his first-inning double had begun the comeback from an early deficit.

Marist starter Tyler Hartley earned the win, working six innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits. He struck out three. The Red Foxes’ bullpen combined for three innings of relief, surrendering only a solo home run to Manhattan’s Dylan Mayer in the ninth.

Manhattan had built a 5-0 lead before Marist came to bat, capitalizing on control issues and defensive miscues. The Jaspers scored two in the first without a hit, then added three more in the second on a sacrifice fly from Trevor Hansen and an RBI single from Guriyandel Salva.

Marist immediately answered with three runs in the bottom of the first, keyed by Pollack’s RBI double and a run-scoring single from AJ Brotz, who went 3 for 5 with three RBIs. The Red Foxes tied the game in the second on an RBI groundout from Connor Lawrence and took their first lead in the fifth on a two-run double from Baer, who had two hits and two RBIs.

Manhattan used six pitchers, with starter Joseph Duffield taking the loss. He was charged with four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Reliever Ivan Epps provided a bright spot for the Jaspers with two perfect innings of relief, striking out three.

The victory defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which had simulated a 5-2 Manhattan win, though its ELO rating system gave Marist a 55% probability of victory.

The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
