Northwestern State at Incarnate Word

SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — The Northwestern State Demons and Incarnate Word Cardinals will meet in the second game of a Southland Conference series Saturday evening at Roadrunner Field, looking to build on an offensive showcase from the opener.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with a temperature near 77 degrees.

Incarnate Word (7-6) took the series opener Friday afternoon, outlasting Northwestern State (7-7) in a 13-9 slugfest. The Cardinals’ offense pounded out 15 hits, while the Demons committed four errors.

Players from that game will be in the spotlight again Saturday. Incarnate Word left fielder Jake Weaver enters on a hot streak, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBIs in Friday’s victory. Over his last five games, Weaver is 9-for-18 (.500) with four RBIs.

Northwestern State will counter with its own power threat in left fielder J.T. Simonelli, who launched a home run and drove in four runs on a 2-for-4 afternoon in the loss. Simonelli is 5-for-12 (.417) over his last three games with a homer and four RBIs.

Both teams have seen inconsistent starts to the season. The Demons have alternated wins and losses over their last six games. The Cardinals had dropped three straight before Friday’s high-scoring win.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Saturday’s contest is projected to be a tighter affair, with a predicted final score of 5-4 in favor of Incarnate Word.

The series will conclude Sunday afternoon in San Antonio.
