Villanova at Florida A&M
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Jay Campbell’s two-run homer sparked a five-run rally and Tanner Walker delivered five strong innings of relief as the Florida A&M Rattlers erased a four-run deficit to defeat the Villanova Wildcats 6-5 on Saturday evening at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium.
The Rattlers (5-9) secured the series victory after winning the opener Friday, while Villanova fell to 3-8.
The game’s decisive shift came in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, completely overturning the Wildcats’ early command. Villanova had built a 5-1 lead, capitalizing on Rattlers’ mistakes in the third and adding a run in the fourth on Carter Richey’s RBI double.
Florida A&M’s comeback began against Villanova starter Jack Kelley, who had held the Rattlers hitless through four and two-thirds innings but struggled with command, walking four and hitting a batter. With two outs in the fifth, Alex Monile was hit by a pitch, bringing Campbell to the plate. The third baseman connected on a two-run homer to left field, cutting the deficit to 5-3 and igniting the home crowd.
Kelley (4.2 IP, 0 H, 4 ER, 5 K) was removed after allowing a single and a double immediately following the homer. Reliever Matthew Kahn entered and gave up an RBI single to Colton Ryals, allowing another inherited runner to score and bringing the Rattlers within a run.
The momentum carried into the sixth. Caden Kresak led off with a single and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and a Villanova throwing error. Monile then drove him in with a single to left, tying the game at 5. Campbell followed with his third RBI of the day, a single to left center that scored Matthew Perez with the go-ahead run.
Walker (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 K), who entered in the fourth inning for starter Garrett Workman, was instrumental in stabilizing the game for Florida A&M. After allowing the RBI double in his first inning of work, he settled in to shut down the Wildcats’ offense, striking out five and scattering four hits to earn the win. His performance provided the bridge to the back of the bullpen after the Rattlers’ offense seized the lead.
Villanova had taken its early lead without a hit in the first two innings. In the second, JoJo Montgomery delivered a two-run single after a walk and a hit batter. In the third, two Florida A&M errors opened the door, and catcher Mark Gialluisi capitalized with a two-run single to make it 4-1.
Florida A&M’s bullpen closed the door after Walker departed. Cody Williams worked a perfect ninth inning, striking out one, to secure the save.
The Rattlers outhit the Wildcats 11-6, with Campbell, Ethan Miller (2-for-5, RBI), and Ryals (2-for-4, RBI) leading the offense. For Villanova, Gialluisi and Montgomery each drove in two runs.
JP Podgorski provided two scoreless innings of relief for Villanova, but the Wildcats’ offense managed just two hits after the fourth inning and could not answer the Rattlers’ rally.
The teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday.
