Canisius at Delaware
NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — Vincent Davis homered twice and drove in five runs, powering the Delaware Blue Hens to a 14-1 rout of the Canisius Golden Griffins in college baseball Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Blue Hens erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to turn a close game into a lopsided afternoon affair, avenging a loss to the Golden Griffins from the previous day. Delaware improved to 6-9 overall, while Canisius fell to 3-8.
The most important part of the game was Delaware’s explosive fourth inning, which transformed a 4-1 contest into an 11-1 blowout and removed all doubt about the outcome. The Blue Hens sent 13 batters to the plate, collecting seven hits and capitalizing on a Canisius pitching change. The frame was highlighted by a two-run homer from Davis and a three-run blast from shortstop Matthew Minckler, his first of the season.
Canisius had taken an early lead in the first inning. Bennett Cox led off with a double, advanced to third on a bunt single by Jc Spinosa and scored on Mason Cisco’s sacrifice fly. That would be the high point for the Golden Griffins, who managed only two hits total against four Delaware pitchers.
Blue Hens starter Chase Deibler earned the win, allowing one run on those two hits over four innings. He struck out four. The Delaware bullpen of Ryan Pugh and Evan Lewis combined for three perfect innings of relief to close out the game.
Davis, Delaware’s first baseman, was the standout performer. After tripling in the third, he launched a two-run shot in the fourth and a three-run homer in the fifth, finishing 3 for 5. The performance marked a significant breakout, as Davis had been held to just one hit in each of his previous two games.
Minckler went 2 for 4 with his three-run homer and four RBIs. Jeremy Wolf added three hits and an RBI, while LT Cockrill and Anthony Charles each had an RBI.
For Canisius, starter Joe Lopinto took the loss. Reliever Matt Boffalo entered in the fifth inning and recorded three strikeouts but was charged with two earned runs. Trent Rudge pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the Golden Griffins.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 6-2 Delaware victory, with the Blue Hens given a 70% probability to win according to its ELO system. The actual result far exceeded that forecast.
The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon. Canisius will then travel to face Mount Saint Mary’s next weekend, while Delaware will visit Penn on Tuesday before a weekend series at Louisiana Tech.
