Fresno State at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — Owen Kramkowski delivered a dominant performance on the mound, striking out 12 over six shutout innings, and Tony Lira provided an immediate offensive spark with a three-run homer in the first as the Arizona Wildcats shut out the Fresno State Bulldogs 6-0 on Friday night at Hi Corbett Field.

The most important part of the game came immediately, as Arizona seized control in the bottom of the first inning against Fresno State starter Tyler Patrick. After walking the first two batters, Patrick faced Lira, who launched a three-run home run to left field, staking the Wildcats to a 3-0 lead before an out was recorded. Arizona was not done, adding another run on an RBI fielder’s choice by Jackson Forbes to cap a four-run, four-hit inning that set the tone for the evening.

That early outburst was more than enough for Kramkowski, who rebounded emphatically from a rough outing the previous week at Oregon. The right-hander scattered five hits and walked none, overpowering Fresno State batters with 12 strikeouts. He worked out of his only significant jam in the top of the first, stranding Bulldogs shortstop Brady Hewitt at third base after a leadoff triple by recording three consecutive strikeouts.

Fresno State, which entered the game with a 7-4 record and had won four of its last five, managed eight hits but went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Hewitt led the Bulldogs offense, going 2 for 4 with a triple and a double. Weston Thornbury provided strong relief for Fresno State, throwing three perfect innings with three strikeouts after entering in the sixth.

Arizona, which improved to 4-9, added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Maddox Mihalakis drove in both, first with a sacrifice fly and later with an RBI single, finishing 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Forbes also had two hits and an RBI, while Lira went 2 for 4 with the decisive three-run blast.

The Wildcats bullpen preserved the shutout, with Corey Kling allowing two hits over two scoreless innings and Benton Hickman striking out two in a perfect ninth.

The result defied the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-2 Fresno State victory, though the service’s ELO system gave Arizona a 69.9 percent probability to win.

Fresno State’s season record moved to 7-5, while Arizona evened its home record at 3-3. The two teams continue their three-game series Saturday at Hi Corbett Field.
