Hernandez Powers Winthrop Past Maine in Afternoon-Night Contest
ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — Jaylen Hernandez drove in four runs, including a three-run homer, to lead the Winthrop Eagles to a 7-4 victory over the Maine Black Bears on Friday in a game that spanned afternoon and evening at Winthrop Ballpark.
Hernandez’s blast capped a five-run third inning for the Eagles, erasing an early deficit. Maine had taken the lead but Winthrop’s outburst, which also featured an RBI double from Josh Skowronski and a run-scoring single by Norton, proved decisive. Troy Carpenter hit a two-run homer for the Black Bears in the sixth to close the gap, but Chazz Grossington answered with a solo shot for Winthrop in the bottom half.
Harrison Wilson earned the win with three perfect innings of relief. Gianni Gambradella took the loss for Maine. The Eagles improved to 7-2 overall while the Black Bears fell to 2-8.
