Nevada at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. (Interstat) — Zach Story launched a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday evening, capping a dramatic comeback that lifted the UC Davis Aggies to a 5-4 victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack at Dobbins Baseball Complex.

The game’s defining moment came from Story, who sent the first pitch he saw from Nevada reliever Eric Valdez over the left-field fence, erasing a late four-run deficit and snapping a two-game skid for the Aggies. The win improved UC Davis to 4-5 on the season, while Nevada fell to 3-4.

For seven innings, the story was dominant pitching. Nevada starter Mahiro Tomita was brilliant, firing five no-hit innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. He was matched for much of the night by UC Davis ace Noel Valdez, who delivered six strong innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six.

Nevada scratched across a single run in the second inning when Rominic Quiban’s single scored Jacob Blythe. The Wolf Pack then appeared to break the game open in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on the Aggies’ bullpen for three runs. A sacrifice fly by Tyler Harvey and an RBI double by Matt Dobie highlighted the inning, stretching Nevada’s lead to 4-0.

The momentum shifted violently in the bottom of the seventh. After Nik Miller relieved Tomita, the Aggies’ offense erupted. Story sparked the rally with a double that scored Kaden McNeal, who reached on a fielder’s choice. Following a walk, catcher Evan Gentil cleared the bases with a two-run double to left-center, slicing Nevada’s lead to 4-3. The Aggies sent eight men to the plate in the frame, chasing Miller and forcing Nevada to use three pitchers.

Eric Valdez entered to quell the seventh-inning threat and worked a scoreless eighth, but UC Davis tied the game in the ninth. Conner Howard led off with a double and later scored on a two-out, RBI single by Houston Hirschkorn, sending the game to extra innings.

In the tenth, Valdez returned to the mound for Nevada. After recording two quick outs, he faced Story, who ended the contest with his first hit of the night, a no-doubt solo shot that completed the Aggies’ rally.

Peter Storjohann earned the win for UC Davis with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief, striking out five. Valdez took the loss for Nevada.

The teams will continue their three-game series Saturday afternoon at Dobbins Baseball Complex.
