Old Dominion at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — A pair of local Division I programs will meet under the lights Wednesday as the Norfolk State Spartans host the Old Dominion Monarchs in a midweek nonconference matchup at Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST in clear but chilly conditions, with temperatures expected to be around 43 degrees at game time.

The Monarchs (5-2) enter with momentum, having swept a three-game series from Niagara last weekend, including a 5-4 victory on Saturday. Old Dominion’s bullpen has been a strength, and a key performer has been right-hander Cole Lanford. He earned the win in Saturday’s game, throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Over his last appearance, he has allowed just two hits with one strikeout.

Norfolk State (2-4) looks to rebound after dropping two of three to Manhattan at home, including a 13-4 loss on Saturday. Spartans reliever James Godfrey provided a bright spot in that game, firing two scoreless innings and allowing one hit with one strikeout. The Spartans will need similar effectiveness from their pitching staff to slow down the Monarchs’ offense.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Old Dominion is projected to win 7-3. The Monarchs hold the edge in early-season record, but the intrastate rivalry often levels the playing field.

Following this game, both teams dive into weekend series. Old Dominion will host Charlotte for three games beginning Friday. Norfolk State remains home to face Mount Saint Mary’s in a three-game set starting the same day.
