Dallas Baptist at Texas-Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas (Interstat) — The Dallas Baptist Patriots capitalized on early mistakes and rode a dominant performance from their bullpen to defeat the Texas-Arlington Mavericks 6-1 in nonconference baseball Tuesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The game’s decisive moment came immediately, as the Patriots sent nine men to the plate in a chaotic top of the first inning, scoring four runs without the benefit of an extra-base hit. Facing Mavericks starter Havern, Grady drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a walk to Ben. After a flyout moved Ben to third, Ben Tryon drove him in with an infield single to the mound. A throwing error on the play by Havern allowed Grady to score and Tryon to take second. Tryon then stole third and scored, along with Krauss who had driven in Grady with another infield single, on a base hit from Rose. All four runs were charged to Havern, who failed to record an out before being relieved by Danny Valadez.

That early outburst proved sufficient as a parade of seven Dallas Baptist pitchers combined to stifle the Mavericks offense. Starter Tate Hess worked 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits but no runs. He was followed by Max Luzarraga, who tossed 2 1/3 perfect innings with two strikeouts. The bullpen corps of Liam Watt, Armani Knipper, Athan Kroll, and JT Long preserved the lead, with the only blemish an unearned run in the seventh inning that scored on a balk.

Texas-Arlington’s best chance to rally came in that seventh. Trailing 6-0, they loaded the bases with one out against Knipper. A passed ball allowed a run to score, but Kroll entered and struck out Mazoch to end the threat. The Mavericks put two more runners on in the ninth, but Long struck out Mazoch and got Fields to pop out to seal the victory.

Ben Tryon led the Patriots’ nine-hit attack, going 4 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. The Mavericks managed eight hits but grounded into two double plays and stranded multiple runners.

Dallas Baptist improved to 5-3 this season, while Texas-Arlington fell to 2-6. The Patriots’ bullpen was the story, with Hess, Luzarraga, Watt, Knipper, Kroll, and Long combining for 6 1/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief, striking out six.

The Patriots next host Oral Roberts on Thursday. The Mavericks begin a three-game series at Arkansas on Friday.
