Evansville at Vanderbilt
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Vanderbilt Commodores, riding a potent offense and strong early-season form, will host the struggling Evansville Purple Aces in a nonconference matchup Tuesday at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium.
First pitch is scheduled for the evening, with frigid conditions expected as the forecast calls for a clear sky and a temperature of 26 degrees.
Vanderbilt (6-2) enters with momentum, having won five of its last six games. The Commodores are averaging 11.4 runs per game during that stretch, including an 8-1 victory over Marist on Sunday. A key performer out of the bullpen has been Nate Taylor, who tossed four scoreless innings with six strikeouts in that win.
Evansville (1-5) seeks to build on its first victory of the season, a 1-0 shutout of Kentucky on Saturday behind strong pitching from Kevin Reed and Tanner Graham. The Purple Aces will look to sophomore left-hander Max Hansmann to provide a similar spark. Hansmann delivered five scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts in a loss to Kentucky last week.
The teams are on divergent trajectories. Vanderbilt’s two losses came by a combined three runs to top-25 foes Oklahoma State and Texas Christian. Evansville, meanwhile, has been outscored 50-19 in its five losses, including an 18-11 defeat to Marshall.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Vanderbilt is projected to win 6-2.
Following Tuesday’s game, Vanderbilt embarks on a West Coast trip to face UC Irvine, Arizona and Oregon in Las Vegas. Evansville returns home to begin a three-game series with Milwaukee on Friday.
