Air Force at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. (Interstat) — Trey Morris pitched 5 2/3 strong innings and Josh Proctor drove in four runs with a homer and three hits as Oregon State beat Air Force 8-1 Saturday evening at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

Morris allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out six for the Beavers, who improved to 43-12. The Falcons fell to 25-26.

Proctor’s two-run home run in the eighth inning put the game out of reach, but the contest was decided earlier when Oregon State erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third to take control.

Oregon State starter Morris worked around a first-inning single by Zapp and stranded him. The Falcons scratched out a run in the top of the fourth when Zapp led off with his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center that cut Air Force’s deficit to 5-1.

That was all the Falcons could muster against a deep Oregon State bullpen. After Morris departed following 5 2/3 innings, relievers AJ Hutcheson, Tanner Douglas, Isaac Yeager and Albert Roblez combined for 3 1/3 hitless innings, striking out eight.

Air Force’s pitching staff, which had been effective in a 9-6 win Friday, struggled with command early. In the bottom of the second, Haight reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Air Force first baseman Boyd. Proctor then singled through the right side to drive in Haight with an unearned run, tying the game at 1-1.

The decisive third inning began with walks to Talt and Vazquez and another walk to Porter, loading the bases with one out. Air Force brought in Easton Miller from the bullpen, but Haight was hit by a pitch to force in a run, giving the Beavers a 2-1 lead. Proctor followed with a run-scoring single to short, and Jacob Galloway capped the rally with a two-run single through the right side, putting Oregon State ahead 5-1.

The Beavers added three more runs in the eighth. Haight walked and Proctor crushed his seventh homer of the year to left field, a two-run shot that made it 7-1. Galloway doubled and later scored on a fielder’s choice by Inge to complete the scoring.

Air Force’s best chance to rally came in the eighth after Elmore doubled and stole third, but OSU reliever Yeager struck out Oster to end the threat. The Falcons were limited to three hits overall: Zapp’s single and homer and Elmore’s double.

Ethan Dillinger pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for Air Force, striking out one, and Joey Collier added two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief. But the Falcons could not overcome the early deficit.

Oregon State’s Galloway finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs. For Air Force, Zapp provided the only run with his solo homer.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Oregon State 7, Air Force 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave Oregon State an 85.50 percent probability to win. Oregon State was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 4.5.
