Memphis at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE (Interstat) — Charlotte’s Cody Gunderson lined a two-run single down the left‑field line with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the 49ers an 8‑7 victory over Memphis on Saturday afternoon at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.

The win evened the three‑game American Athletic Conference series after Memphis took the opener Thursday and Charlotte answered Friday. Charlotte improved to 28‑27 overall and 28‑27 in conference play, while Memphis fell to 22‑32 and 22‑32.

Memphis jumped ahead in the first inning, sending nine men to the plate and scoring five runs on four hits. Freddy Rodriguez singled home a run, and Trae Cassidy and Nick Harrington each drove in runs as the Tigers built a 5‑0 lead. Charlotte answered in the bottom half, as Alec DeMartino crushed a two‑run homer to left field that scored Robert Nedry, cutting the deficit to 5‑2.

The Tigers added two more runs in the third inning when Charlie Smith homered to left center, scoring two, and Cassidy singled home another run to push the lead to 7‑2. Charlotte chipped away in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on three hits, including a two‑run single by Nedry that also scored on a fielding error, and an RBI single by Trey Hudson that made it 7‑5.

Adam Stanton entered in relief for Charlotte in the top of the third with two outs and runners on second and third. Stanton shut down the Memphis offense, working 6⅓ innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out five. He faced 25 batters and did not walk a Tiger after entering. The Tigers managed only one hit over the final six innings.

Memphis starter Logan Rushing matched Stanton’s effectiveness for a stretch, tossing four shutout innings in relief of starter Jacob Garner. Rushing did not allow a hit, struck out none and walked none, keeping the 49ers at bay through the sixth.

Charlotte stranded runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, grounding into two double plays that stalled potential rallies.

In the ninth, Memphis led 7‑5 when Carson Fair relieved Charlie Smith. Fair walked Nolan Sceroler to lead off the inning. Nedry singled, and Hudson singled to load the bases with no outs. DeMartino struck out swinging for the first out. Derek Koontz grounded out to first base, scoring Sceroler and moving the runners to second and third, making it 7‑6. Gunderson then stepped in and lined a two‑run single down the left‑field line, scoring Hudson and Nedry to win the game.

Gunderson finished 2‑for‑4 with two RBIs. Nedry went 3‑for‑5 with two RBIs, and DeMartino was 3‑for‑5 with a homer and two RBIs. For Memphis, Rodriguez was 2‑for‑5 with two RBIs, Michael Gupton went 2‑for‑5 and Cassidy drove in two runs.

The game was the second of a three‑game series. Charlotte won Friday 8‑2, while Memphis won Thursday 9‑4.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Charlotte 7, Memphis 6, and its ELO system gave the 49ers a 69.40 percent probability to win.
