Memphis at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Memphis Tigers and Charlotte 49ers wrap up their three-game American Athletic Conference series Saturday afternoon at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium, with first pitch set for a 75-degree afternoon under cloudy skies.

Memphis (22-31 overall) enters the finale after a commanding 8-2 loss to Charlotte on Friday, following a 9-4 victory Thursday. The Tigers have dropped four of their last five games, including a 10-9 loss at Middle Tennessee on Tuesday. Charlotte (27-27) split the series and is coming off an 11-1 win over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday before the series opener.

Right-hander David Case is a player to watch for Memphis. The Tigers’ pitcher tossed six innings of scoreless, hitless ball Friday, striking out six, but did not factor in the decision. He has been inconsistent — Case surrendered six earned runs on eight hits against Texas-San Antonio on May 9, but allowed one earned run over six innings in a win against East Carolina on May 2. Over his last five starts, Case has a 3.00 ERA in 30 innings, with 24 strikeouts and 13 hits allowed.

Charlotte counters with right-hander Eddie Copper, who earned the win Friday by allowing one earned run on two hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out six. Copper has been effective recently, tossing four scoreless innings in a win at Florida Atlantic on April 26 and five innings of one-run ball against Tulane on May 2. His only rough outing came May 9 at UAB, where he failed to record an out and allowed four earned runs.

The 49ers have been hot at the plate. In Friday’s win, left fielder Todd Hudson went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Charlotte’s offense has scored at least eight runs in three of its last four wins.

Memphis’s offense has struggled, scoring two runs or fewer in four of its last six games. The Tigers managed only four hits Friday.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Charlotte victory, and the ELO system gives the 49ers a 69.4 percent probability of winning.

The series finale will be a crucial test for both teams as the regular season winds down. Charlotte seeks to build momentum for the conference tournament, while Memphis tries to avoid a series loss.
