Saturday, May 16, 2026 · Final · F/10 · SUNBELT Playoffs Game 3 (TXST wins 3-0)

Marshall at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas (Interstat) — Justin Vossos hit his second home run of the game, a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the 10th inning, and Alizaeh Gutierrez delivered six shutout innings of relief as Texas State rallied past Marshall 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.

The Bobcats completed a three-game Sun Belt series sweep, improving to 34-22 overall. Marshall dropped to 23-31.

Vossos, the second baseman, finished 2 for 3 with two homers and two RBIs. His game-ending blast came off Marshall reliever Alex Caudill with one out in the 10th, sending the ball over the left field wall.

Texas State trailed 4-0 after the top of the first inning. Marshall’s Evan Bottone led off the game with a home run to right field, and two batters later Jackson Halter added a solo shot to center field. The Thundering Herd added two more runs in the third inning. Bottone doubled and scored on a throwing error by the Texas State pitcher on a failed pickoff attempt, and Halter doubled home Tyler Kamerer for an unearned run.

Marshall starter Kenyon Collins pitched six innings, allowing three runs on zero hits with six strikeouts. The zero hits was a misleading line because Texas State managed just one hit off Collins through four innings but broke through in the fifth. Blake Beheler hit a two-run homer down the left field line that scored Brady Boles, cutting the lead to 4-2. Vossos then homered to left center in the sixth, making it 4-3.

Gutierrez entered in the third inning after Marshall had already scored four runs. He allowed just two hits over six innings, striking out three and walking none. The relief effort stabilized the Bobcats after a rocky start. Texas State tied the game in the eighth when Boles walked with the bases loaded, forcing in Clayton Namken. The inning featured two hit batters and a walk from Marshall relievers Landen Doll and Davis Gunn before Caudill struck out Beheler to escape further damage.

Marshall threatened in the top of the ninth. Ethan Murdoch walked with one out against Gutierrez, and Jesus Tovar relieved. Murdoch advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, but Tovar retired the next two batters. Tovar worked two scoreless innings of relief, striking out one, to earn the win.

Bottone led Marshall with two hits, including the leadoff homer and a double, and drove in one run. Halter also had two hits, including the homer and a double, with two RBIs. AJ Havrilla added two singles.

For Texas State, Beheler went 1 for 4 with the two-run homer and two RBIs. Jaquae Stewart doubled and Namken had two singles.

The series marked the third consecutive win for Texas State over Marshall, following a 12-9 victory Friday and a 5-0 shutout Thursday. Marshall had dropped five of its last six games entering the weekend.

The game was a rematch of the previous night’s high-scoring affair, but Saturday featured strong pitching after the early outburst. Collins and Gutierrez combined to allow only seven hits between them over 12 innings. Doll took the loss for Marshall, giving up the tying run in the eighth after Collins had departed.

Vossos’ walk-off homer capped a comeback that began with Beheler’s blast in the fifth. The Bobcats had not led until the final swing.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Texas State 5, Marshall 4, and the ELO system gave Texas State a 69.10 percent probability to win.
