Marshall at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas (Interstat) — The Texas State Bobcats look to complete a series sweep Saturday afternoon when they host the Marshall Thundering Herd in a Sun Belt Conference matchup at Bobcat Ballpark. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. under cloudy skies with a temperature of 87 degrees.

Texas State (32-22 overall) has already taken the first two games of the three-game set, including a 5-0 shutout Thursday in which right-hander Ryan Markwardt dominated. The Bobcats have won three of their last four games overall and sit above .500 in conference play.

Marshall (23-29) has dropped three straight since a 7-4 win over Louisiana-Monroe on May 9. The Thundering Herd’s offense has struggled, scoring just two runs in the series’ first two games while being held to three hits in Thursday’s loss.

Two pitchers who squared off in the opener are expected to start again Saturday, though the teams have not confirmed their rotations.

Marshall’s Bryce Blevins took the loss Thursday despite an unusual line: seven innings, no hits allowed, but five earned runs and three strikeouts. The senior right-hander walked five batters and hit two, leading to the runs. Over his last four starts, Blevins has thrown at least seven innings each time, posting a 4.50 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 30 innings. He has been volatile, allowing zero hits in two of those outings yet still surrendering four earned runs in each.

Texas State’s Ryan Markwardt countered Thursday with six scoreless innings, scattering two hits while fanning nine. The sophomore lefty has been nearly untouchable in recent weeks, allowing just one hit and no earned runs over his last 11 innings across three appearances. He has struck out 21 batters in that span while walking only two. For the season, Markwardt has a 2.87 ERA and a 7-3 record, serving as the Bobcats’ most consistent arm.

Offensively, Texas State first baseman Jaquae Stewart went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in Thursday’s win. He is hitting .310 with 12 homers this season. The Bobcats’ lineup also features Jesus Tovar, who threw three scoreless innings of relief Thursday while striking out four.

Marshall’s offense has been led by second baseman Tyler Kamerer, who went 1-for-4 in the opener but is batting .287 on the year. The Thundering Herd will need more production after managing only two hits Thursday.

The teams split a doubleheader Friday; Marshall took the first game 4-3 before Texas State won the nightcap 6-2.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected score is Texas State 5, Marshall 4. The Bobcats have a 69.1 percent probability to win, according to the ELO system.

Texas State aims to extend its winning streak to four games and improve its postseason positioning, while Marshall looks to salvage the series finale and snap a three-game skid.
