Penn State at Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — The Maryland Terrapins rallied from an early deficit and used a go-ahead two-run homer by catcher Devin Russell in the sixth inning to defeat the Penn State Nittany Lions 6-4 on Saturday afternoon at Shipley Field in a Big Ten contest.
Russell finished 3 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs, continuing a torrid series. He also homered twice in Maryland’s 12-2 win Friday. His second blast Saturday, a 2-run shot to left field in the bottom of the sixth, erased a one-run deficit and handed the Terrapins a lead they never relinquished.
Penn State grabbed a 4-0 advantage in the first inning when Jayden Davis homered to right field, but Maryland chipped away. Bud Coombs scored on a fielder’s choice in the second, and Russell led off the third with a solo home run to left center. The Terrapins tied the game 4-4 in the fourth when Paul Jones II blasted a two-run homer to right field, scoring Coombs who had singled.
The Nittany Lions answered in the sixth. Spencer Barnett homered to center field and Maddox McDonald followed with a solo shot to center, giving Penn State a 4-4 tie. But Russell struck again in the bottom half. After Nate Hawton-H walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, Russell sent a 1-0 pitch over the left-field wall for the decisive blow.
Maryland’s pitching staff held Penn State scoreless over the final three innings. Starter Logan Hastings allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out 12 over six innings. Lance Williams relieved and tossed three perfect innings with five strikeouts to earn the save. For Penn State, Ben DeMell took the loss after allowing two runs in the sixth. Mason Horwat pitched two scoreless innings with one strikeout.
Penn State’s Michael Anderson doubled twice, driving in a run and finishing 2 for 5. McDonald and Barnett each went 1 for 3 with a homer. The Nittany Lions managed seven hits total. Maryland collected 10 hits, including Russell’s two homers and two hits from Jones II, who also homered and drove in two.
The victory gave Maryland a 2-1 series lead after Penn State won Thursday’s opener 13-3. The Terrapins improved to 26-28 overall, while Penn State dropped to 16-35.
