Penn State at Maryland
College Park, Md. (Interstat) — Penn State and Maryland meet for the third time in three days Saturday afternoon at Shipley Field, with the Nittany Lions looking to build on a lopsided victory and the Terrapins seeking to even the Big Ten series.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. under partly cloudy skies, with temperatures near 67 degrees.
Penn State (16-33) enters the game after a 13-3 rout of Maryland on Thursday. Michael Anderson led the attack, going 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs. The designated hitter is batting .429 (3-for-7) over his last two games overall, following a 1-for-5 outing Tuesday at Pittsburgh. In his last 10 appearances, Anderson has two homers and five RBIs, though he has also gone hitless in three of those contests.
Maryland (24-28) has lost two straight after a midweek win over Georgetown. The Terrapins were held to three runs on six hits in Thursday’s loss to Penn State. David Mendez had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs in that game. The second baseman is batting .364 (4-for-11) in his last three games and has four home runs and seven RBIs over his past seven contests. However, he has been held hitless in four of his last seven games.
The series opener Friday saw Penn State win 13-0. On Thursday, Maddox McDonald added two hits, a home run and three RBIs for Penn State. Colin Fitzgerald pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out five.
Penn State has won two of its last three games overall. The Nittany Lions took two of three from Washington earlier this month and dropped two of three against Minnesota. Maryland, meanwhile, has lost five of its last seven, including a series sweep at Rutgers and a home series loss to Michigan.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-4 win for Maryland.
