Grand Canyon at Nevada
RENO (Interstat) — Grand Canyon Antelopes defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack 9-3 on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at William Peccole Park in an afternoon game that saw the Antelopes pound out 18 hits and receive a standout relief performance from Nicholas Robb.
Grand Canyon improved to 21-30 overall and evened the Mountain West series at one win apiece after losing 9-13 on Thursday and winning 12-7 on Friday. Nevada fell to 22-26.
Robb, who entered with a 1.2-inning scoreless outing in his previous appearance, threw 4.2 innings of hitless relief while striking out four and allowing no earned runs. He worked around an unearned run charged to starter Elijah Higginbottom in the first inning and did not permit a base runner until the fourth. Higginbottom pitched four innings, gave up two earned runs on four hits and struck out four. Jace Smith recorded the final out for Grand Canyon, striking out one in a third of an inning.
The Antelopes took control early. In the top of the first, Michael Perez singled, moved to second on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a groundout by Cameron in the second. Grand Canyon added two more in the second inning on a single by Perez that scored Bates. Nevada answered in the bottom of the first when an error by first baseman Cannon Peery allowed Mikey to score unearned, cutting the lead to 2-1. Lee Matsuzaki’s two-run homer in the fourth pulled the Wolf Pack within 5-3, but Grand Canyon replied with a four-run eighth inning to put the game away.
The most critical sequence came in the top of the third. Leading 2-1, Grand Canyon sent nine batters to the plate. Peery singled. Tanner Johns doubled to left center, scoring Peery. After a groundout advanced Johns to third, Jose Lopez doubled to left center to plate Johns. Bates then singled through the left side, driving in Lopez for a 5-1 advantage. The three-run inning pushed the lead to four runs and forced Nevada to play from behind the rest of the way.
In the eighth, the Antelopes added insurance. Cameron singled and later scored on a double by Peery. Johns followed with a two-run single that scored Schmidt and Peery, extending the lead to 8-3. Dominic Chacon capped the scoring in the ninth with a solo home run to deep right field.
Johns finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Lopez went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Peery had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run. Perez collected three singles and scored once. Grand Canyon’s 18 hits were nearly double Nevada’s nine. Alessandro Castro started for Nevada and took the loss, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits in five innings while striking out seven.
Matsuzaki led the Wolf Pack offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Aiden Pollock pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.
