Grand Canyon at Nevada

RENO, Nev. (Interstat) — Grand Canyon visits Nevada in a Mountain West series finale Saturday afternoon at William Peccole Park, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. The Antelopes (19-30) lost the opener Thursday 13-9 to the Wolf Pack (22-24), then dropped Friday’s game 6-0.

Weather at game time is forecast to be 63 degrees and clear.

Grand Canyon will send right-hander Chase Frey to the mound. Frey (2-5, 6.07 ERA) struggled Thursday against Nevada, allowing five earned runs over 6 1/3 innings while striking out two and giving up no hits. In his previous start May 8 against New Mexico, he worked seven innings, allowed four earned runs and struck out six in a 6-5 win. Frey also threw a seven-inning shutout April 18 against San Jose State, scattering no hits and one earned run with six strikeouts.

Nevada catcher Jake Harvey has been the Wolf Pack’s most consistent hitter. In Thursday’s win, Harvey went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Over his last 10 games, he has driven in 11 runs while hitting .289 (11-for-38) with two homers. Harvey’s production has been vital for a Nevada lineup that has averaged 6.8 runs over its last four wins.

The Wolf Pack (22-24) have lost four of their last five overall, including a three-game sweep at Southern California last weekend. Grand Canyon has dropped three of its last four, with the lone win coming May 8 against New Mexico.

Thursday’s head-to-head featured offensive fireworks. Nevada’s Aidan Brainard earned the win with six innings of three-run ball, allowing seven hits and striking out five. Grand Canyon’s Camden Bates hit a two-run homer, and Brock Toney threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-2 Grand Canyon victory, with the Antelopes holding a 54 percent win probability per the ELO system.

Grand Canyon needs Frey to rebound after his erratic outing Thursday. The Antelopes’ bullpen has a 5.12 ERA in May, and they have surrendered 11 runs in the last two games against Nevada. Nevada will counter with a yet-to-be-announced starter, but Harvey’s bat and the home crowd provide an edge.

A win Saturday would give Nevada its first series sweep of Grand Canyon this season. The Antelopes are seeking their first road series victory since taking two of three at San Jose State earlier this month.
