Ohio State at Michigan

ANN ARBOR (Interstat) — The Ohio State Buckeyes completed a three-game sweep of the Michigan Wolverines with an 8-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium.

Ohio State scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed, adding an unearned run in the seventh and three more unearned runs in the ninth. The Buckeyes outhit Michigan 6-3 and took advantage of four Wolverines errors.

Chris Domke started on the mound for Ohio State and earned the win, though no specific line was reported. The Buckeyes improved to 29-23 overall, while Michigan dropped to 32-22.

The decisive sequence came in the first inning. After two quick groundouts, Noah Furcht and Dane Harvey were hit by pitches. Maddix Simpson singled through the left side to score Furcht, and Mason Eckelman walked to load the bases. Lee Ellis then doubled to right-center, clearing the bases for a 4-0 lead.

Michigan’s only run came in the fourth when Brayden Jefferis homered to right field, his fourth of the season. Noah Miller followed with a double, but the Wolverines could not push another run across.

Ohio State tacked on a run in the seventh without a hit. Furcht walked, Harvey doubled, and Simpson lifted a sacrifice fly to left-center. The Buckeyes broke the game open in the ninth as Michigan committed three errors. Simpson reached on a fielding error by first baseman Matthew Ossenfort, and Eckelman reached on a fielder’s choice that included a throwing error by Jefferis, now at shortstop. A wild pitch moved both runners, and Ellis reached on a throwing error by second baseman Colby Turner, scoring Simpson. Grant Mangrum then bunted into a fielder’s choice that led to another throwing error by pitcher Grant Bradley, scoring Eckelman. Miles Vandenheuvel’s sacrifice fly plated Ellis for the final margin.

Michigan used six pitchers: starter Michael Quedens lasted only two outs. David Lally threw 5.2 scoreless innings, striking out five, but the Buckeyes touched Slade Moore, Erik Puodziunas, Grant Bradley and Max Debiec for three unearned runs in the seventh and ninth.

The Wolverines managed only three hits: Turner singled in the first, Jefferis homered in the fourth and Miller doubled in the fourth. Ohio State’s six hits included Ellis’s double, Simpson’s single, Alex Bemis’s single, Miles Vandenheuvel’s single, Furcht’s single and Harvey’s double.

The sweep continued Ohio State’s recent dominance in the series. The Buckeyes won 7-3 on Friday and 13-2 on Thursday. Michigan had won three of four entering the weekend but dropped three straight to fall to .500 at home.

The most important part of the game was Ohio State’s four-run first inning, which established a lead the Wolverines could not overcome and forced Michigan to play from behind the entire contest.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Ohio State 7, Michigan 6. The Interstat ELO system had projected Michigan with a 64.70 percent probability to win.
