Ohio State at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Interstat) — Ohio State and Michigan conclude their weekend Big Ten baseball series Saturday afternoon at Ray Fisher Stadium, with the Buckeyes seeking a sweep after dominating the first two games.

First pitch is set for 4 p.m., with temperatures around 63 degrees and cloudy skies.

Ohio State (28-23) has outscored the Wolverines 20-5 over the first two games, winning 7-3 on Friday and 13-2 on Thursday. Michigan (32-21) looks to salvage the series finale at home.

Both teams are expected to turn to their aces.

Buckeyes right-hander Gavin Kuzniewski will start. He has won four straight decisions, including a complete-game two-hitter against Nebraska on May 1 and a six-inning no-hit performance at Rutgers on April 24. In Friday’s game, Kuzniewski threw six scoreless innings, allowing no hits and three runs — all unearned — while striking out three. He has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last four starts.

Wolverines right-hander Shane Brinham also will take the mound. Brinham was tagged for four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of Friday’s loss. Before that, he had won three consecutive starts, including five-inning scoreless outings at Minnesota on May 9 and at Maryland on May 2. Brinham struck out nine Northwestern batters over five innings on April 18.

Michigan has lost six of its last nine games after a strong start to the season. The Wolverines dropped two of three at Minnesota, lost at Kent State on Tuesday, and have now lost the first two games of this series.

Ohio State has won four of its last five games, including a 3-2, 10-inning win against Michigan State on May 10 and a series victory over Nebraska to open May.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-6 Ohio State victory, though the ELO system gives Michigan a 64.7 percent win probability.

The Buckeyes’ offense has been potent. Grant Mangrum homered and drove in a run in Friday’s win. In Thursday’s 13-2 rout, Ohio State pounded out 15 hits.

Michigan’s hopes rest on Brinham’s bounce-back performance and a lineup that has struggled against Buckeyes pitching. The Wolverines have scored just five runs in two games and have not led at any point in the series.
