Seton Hall at Georgetown

BETHESDA, Md. (Interstat) — Steven Svenson pitched 6⅔ hitless innings and Seton Hall held off a late Georgetown rally Friday night to win 3-2 at Shirley Povich Field in a Big East contest.

Svenson, a right-hander, struck out five and did not allow a baserunner until a seventh-inning error put a Hoya on. He exited after 6⅔ innings with a three-run lead, having faced the minimum through six. John Higgins relieved and earned the save with 2⅓ scoreless innings, striking out one.

Seton Hall broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning. Joe Marini singled up the middle, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Vincent Duffy and a groundout by Aiden Dill, then scored on Shea Grady’s single to third base.

Ryan Strnad extended the lead to 2-0 in the seventh inning with a solo home run to left-center field. After a Marini groundout, Duffy walked, Dill reached on a fielder’s choice and Grady singled to put runners on first and second. Ryan Frontera then singled to right field, driving in Dill for a 3-0 advantage.

Georgetown answered in the bottom of the seventh. Connor Peek singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by Svenson. After a flyout, Dylan Larkins struck out. Jeremy Sheffield then doubled to right-center, scoring Peek. Ashtin Gilio followed with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Higgins entered and retired Connor Price on a groundout to end the inning.

The Pirates’ bullpen held the lead. Higgins worked a 1-2-3 eighth with a double-play grounder, and retired the Hoyas in order in the ninth, striking out Larkins to end the game.

Spencer Seid started for Georgetown and allowed three runs on five hits over 6⅔ innings, striking out five and walking three. Luke Jackman pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out one. Max Whitmer faced two batters in the seventh, yielding two hits but no earned runs.

Seton Hall collected eight hits. Vincent Duffy went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk. Shea Grady had two hits and an RBI. Ryan Strnad homered and drove in a run. The Pirates improved to 16-29 overall.

Georgetown managed only four hits. Jeremy Sheffield doubled and drove in a run. Ashtin Gilio singled and drove in a run. The Hoyas fell to 27-28.

The game was a reversal of the previous day’s result, when Georgetown won 5-1. Seton Hall had lost four straight games entering Friday, including a sweep at the hands of Connecticut. Georgetown had lost two of its previous three, including a 21-6 defeat at Maryland.

Svenson’s outing followed a strong start on May 8 against Connecticut, when he allowed one earned run over 6⅓ innings in a 4-3 loss. He was not involved in the decision Friday.

Georgetown threatened only once after the seventh. In the eighth, Travis Ilitch walked with two outs, but was erased on a double play.

The game marked the second of a three-game series. The teams are scheduled to meet again Saturday.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Georgetown 4, Seton Hall 2. Interstat’s ELO system gave Georgetown a 54.40 percent probability to win.
