Stetson at Queens (NC)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Dallis Moran pitched three innings of hitless relief with seven strikeouts and Stetson rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Queens 5-4 in 14 innings Friday afternoon at Truist Park in an ASUN conference game.

The Hatters improved to 23-30, while the Royals dropped to 15-38. Stetson outhit Queens 9-7, and the game was the second of a four-game series, following a 2-0 Stetson win Thursday.

Queens took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Lively L. singled to left-center, advanced on the throw and drove in Hudson, who had reached on a fielder’s choice. Stetson answered in the second. After a walk and an intentional walk, Andrew Ezell singled up the middle to drive in two runs, giving the Hatters a 2-1 lead.

The game turned in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Basterrechea was hit by a pitch, Marcantel C. singled and Schaefer D. doubled down the left-field line, scoring both runners and putting Queens ahead 3-2. Norris L. then reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Schaefer, making it 4-2.

Stetson cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the eighth. Dessureault singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ezell. The Hatters tied the game in the ninth. With two outs, Perez singled up the middle to drive in Russell, who had walked and stolen second, knotting the score at 4-4.

Both teams stranded runners in extra innings until the top of the 14th. Gonzalez singled and advanced to third on a fielding error by the left fielder. Centracchio then singled down the right-field line to score Gonzalez and give Stetson a 5-4 lead. Ezell added a bunt single, but the Hatters could not add more.

Queens had a chance in the bottom of the 14th. With two outs, Childers G. singled to shortstop, but Hudson struck out swinging to end the game.

Moran, who entered in the eighth, retired nine of the 10 batters he faced, striking out seven. Jack Clevidence of Queens pitched four innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out five. Jackson Gowan started for Queens and gave up two runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.

Andrew Lepine, Thomas Achey, Ethan Phillips and James Hays each threw scoreless relief for Stetson. Andrew Ezell went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Hatters. The winning pitcher was Moran; the loss went to Clevidence.

The most pivotal sequence came in the seventh when Queens erased a one-run deficit with three runs, only for Stetson to answer with a run in the eighth and another in the ninth to force extras. Stetson’s bullpen then dominated, allowing just two hits over the final six innings.

The series continues Saturday at Truist Park.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Stetson 5, Queens 3, and Interstat’s ELO system gave Stetson a 77.60 percent probability of winning.
