Stetson at Queens (NC)
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Stetson Hatters and Queens (NC) Royals will meet Friday afternoon at Truist Park in an ASUN Conference matchup, with the visitors looking to build on a shutout win from the previous day.
Stetson (22-30) beat Queens 2-0 on Thursday, extending its recent surge after taking three of the last four head-to-head meetings. The Hatters carry a 77.6% win probability per Interstat’s ELO system, which projects a 5-3 final score.
Right-hander Joel Core is a key arm for Stetson. Core pitched 4 1/3 hitless innings with two strikeouts in Thursday’s win and has allowed only one earned run over his last two appearances spanning 7 1/3 innings. He worked three scoreless frames against Jacksonville on May 9.
Queens (15-37) counters with Avery Booker, who took the loss Thursday despite a quality start — six innings, seven hits, one earned run and two strikeouts. Booker has struggled with consistency this season, but he threw 6 2/3 shutout innings against Duke on May 5 and has shown the ability to limit damage when his command is sharp.
The Royals have dropped five of their last six games overall, including a 10-3 loss to Elon on Tuesday. Their offense has been inconsistent, plating single runs in three of the past four contests.
Stetson’s bats have been more productive lately, averaging 10 runs over their last five wins. Renzo Gonzalez delivered a solo home run and an RBI in Thursday’s victory and is a threat in the middle of the order.
The Hatters’ bullpen has been effective, with Connor Ball tossing 4 2/3 scoreless innings in Thursday’s combined shutout.
Weather is forecast to be clear and 70 degrees at first pitch.
Both teams have a single game scheduled Saturday at Truist Park to conclude the series.
