California Baptist at UC Davis
DAVIS, Calif. (Interstat) — Riley Hunsaker’s two-run home run in the top of the 11th inning broke a 2-2 tie and lifted California Baptist to a 4-2 victory over UC Davis on Thursday afternoon at Dobbins Baseball Complex, a game that stretched into the evening after extra innings.
The Lancers improved to 42-13, while the Aggies fell to 26-27. California Baptist won for the second consecutive day against UC Davis, having taken the opener of the three-game series 6-3 on Wednesday.
Hunsaker, the Lancers’ center fielder, finished 1 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, the decisive runs coming in the 11th. Leading off the top half of that inning, Camden Andre singled to right center before Hunsaker drove a 2-1 pitch over the right-field wall, putting California Baptist ahead for good.
The win was sealed by relief pitcher Cameron Teper, who worked a clean bottom of the 11th. He struck out two of the four batters he faced and induced a fielder’s choice to end the game.
The game featured an early 1-0 lead for California Baptist in the top of the first inning. After a walk, a single and a hit-by-pitch, Cole Howarth lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Chris Ramire.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth. UC Davis’ Kaden Wooldridge tripled to right center to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Mault. The Aggies then loaded the bases with two outs, but reliever Nico Urquidi came in and struck out Jared Williams to preserve the tie.
Luis Becerra was the top star for California Baptist. The right-hander tossed 5.2 innings, allowing zero hits and one earned run while striking out six. He walked one batter but kept the Aggies off the board until the sixth, when he was lifted after yielding Wooldridge’s triple.
UC Davis starter Jack Pezzolo also turned in a strong outing, going five innings and allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts.
The two staffs traded zeroes through the middle innings. Peter Storjohann pitched three innings of one-hit relief for UC Davis, and California Baptist relievers Andrew Rudd and Zachary Yates combined for three scoreless innings.
The game went to extra innings after neither team scored in the seventh, eighth or ninth. In the top of the 10th, Bryce McFeel doubled to right center with two outs and advanced to third on a wild pitch by UC Davis reliever Tyler Wood. Connor Ross then reached on a throwing error by third baseman Cole Story, allowing McFeel to score and giving the Lancers a 2-1 lead.
But UC Davis answered in the bottom of the 10th. With one out, pinch hitter Sean Howard doubled to left center, scoring Anthony Lee, who had walked. The inning ended when Wooldridge flied out and Mault struck out, sending the game to the 11th.
Hunsaker’s home run came off Wood, who had entered in the ninth and had allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits over three innings.
California Baptist finished with 10 hits, while UC Davis managed five. The Aggies’ only extra-base hits were Wooldridge’s triple and Howard’s double.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of California Baptist 8-7, and its ELO system gave the Lancers a 61.00 percent probability to win the game. The two teams meet again Friday at Dobbins Baseball Complex for the series finale.
