Portland at Oregon State
CORVALLIS, Ore. (Interstat) — The Oregon State Beavers (40-11) host the Portland Pilots (25-23) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, with clear skies and a first-pitch temperature of 76 degrees.
Oregon State, a national contender, has won 12 of its last 14 games and brings a powerful offense and deep pitching staff into the nonconference matchup. The Beavers are coming off a three-game sweep at Long Beach State, outscoring the Dirtbags 23-7.
Right-hander Trey Morris is a key arm for Oregon State. In his last start Sunday at Long Beach State, Morris (6.0 IP, 0 H, 2 ER, 9 K) earned the win. Over his past three outings, including a win over Cal State Northridge and a victory against Texas-Rio Grande Valley, Morris has worked 17 innings with a 1.59 ERA and 18 strikeouts.
Portland has struggled recently, losing five of its last six games, including a Sunday defeat at Pepperdine. The Pilots rely on senior right-hander Morgan Codron, who has been effective despite the team’s recent slide. Codron threw 4.1 innings of scoreless, hitless relief against Pepperdine on Sunday, striking out four. In his previous outing May 5, also against Oregon State, he fired 3.0 scoreless, hitless innings in a 6-4, 12-inning loss to the Beavers. Over his last four appearances covering 9.1 innings, Codron has allowed one earned run.
The teams have split their two meetings this season. Oregon State won 6-4 in 12 innings on May 5 in Portland, while the Pilots took a 3-1 decision March 17 in Corvallis.
Portland’s lineup struggled Sunday, managing only two hits in a 5-2 loss at Pepperdine. Catcher Carter Stewart was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 Oregon State victory.
After Tuesday’s game, both teams open home conference series Thursday. Portland hosts Pacific, and Oregon State welcomes Air Force.
