Saint Thomas (Minn.) at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. (Interstat) — Nolan Grawe homered and drove in three runs to lead South Dakota State to a 7-3 victory over Saint Thomas (Minn.) on Sunday at Erv Huether Field.

Grawe, the Jackrabbits’ third baseman, finished 2 for 5 with a solo home run in the third inning and a two-run double during a six-run sixth inning that turned a one-run deficit into a comfortable lead. He has now collected multiple hits in three of his last four games, including a 4-for-6 outburst in Friday’s 16-13 win over the Tommies.

South Dakota State improved to 16-27 overall and took the three-game Summit League series two games to one. Saint Thomas dropped to 9-35.

The Tommies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A single by Recchio, a hit batter by Fritcher and a walk to Roder loaded the bases with no outs. Bond was hit by a pitch to force in the first run, and Maulik followed with a sacrifice fly to left field for the second run. A throwing error on a subsequent play allowed the third run to score before the inning ended.

Saint Thomas starting pitcher Sam Stockman pitched effectively into the sixth inning, but the Jackrabbits began to chip away. Grawe led off the bottom of the third with a home run to right field, his fifth of the season, cutting the lead to 3-1.

The Tommies answered in the fifth when Maulik singled in Fritcher, who had been hit by a pitch and stolen second, to make it 3-1.

That margin held until the bottom of the sixth, when South Dakota State sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs on five hits. Jones and Franke were hit by pitches to start the rally. Taylor bunted for a single to load the bases. After a strikeout, Werk lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Jones and make it 3-2.

Wroblewski then singled through the left side, scoring Franke and advancing Taylor to third. Taylor also scored when Wroblewski advanced to second on a throwing error by Saint Thomas second baseman Puder, tying the game at 3.

Stockman was replaced by Max Skilbeck, but Grawe greeted him with a double down the left-field line, scoring Taylor and Wroblewski to put South Dakota State ahead 5-3. Wachter followed with an RBI double to score Grawe, and Luskey singled home Wachter to cap the inning at 7-3.

Skilbeck allowed two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Evan Esch tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the Tommies.

South Dakota State’s Ty Madison (4.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 K) and Kaden Rylance (4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 K) combined for eight innings of work. Tristan Augedahl struck out one in a perfect ninth to close the game.

Saint Thomas managed only five hits in the game, grounded into two double plays, and struck out eight times. Matthew Maulik went 1 for 3 with two RBIs, and Owen Bond was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Luke Wroblewski led the Jackrabbits with three hits, going 3 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Jackrabbits will travel to Omaha for a four-game Summit League series beginning Wednesday. The Tommies host North Dakota State for a three-game set starting Thursday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of South Dakota State 5, Saint Thomas 2, and the Interstat ELO system gave the Jackrabbits a 52.40 percent probability to win.
